Returning to normalcy? |
Sept 18
|
A week after we were attacked, it’s still (and with good reason) all anyone can think to talk about. By the end of the day, I’m tired of talking about it, so I don’t update. I’m sure that’s not a good idea, so I’m trying to change that.
I worked hard on my camera dolly this weekend, and I caught up with a couple of people last week who are quickly becoming new friends. It was a good weekend, even though I didn’t yet edit. I’m trying, but I just can’t motivate myself. This week. It’s my goal. |

Pictures are up |

The unthinkable has happened |
Sept 11
|
An attack on US soil that rivals or surpasses anything we’ve ever seen. I watched it unfold from the Silvercup East parking lot and roof and took some pictures (that’ll likely suck). I’ll post them when I get them, just so I can show what I could see. I’m a little overwhelmed at the moment, too caught up in the intensity of the moment to really write about what happened. I did see the plane hit the south tower and later watched the north tower collapse–live and with my own eyes. It was chilling.
Long time no update! |
Sept 10
|
A lot has happened since last I updated and I have neither time nor inclination to talk about it all here. I was in Philly Friday and Saturday, visiting my mother and a friend or two, I went out with Jeannette on Wednesday (I STILL owe her her Minidisc player) and I went to the trendy Tortilla Flats on Thursday. While this schedule took a heavy toll on my sleep schedule and my work habits, it was a very good week altogether. I have editing to do and some things like that which should own my time for the rest of the week, but tonight I just need to rest, eat some dinner, write some e-mails and relax. There will be more to read soon, however, what with the new comic title nearing completion and all that jazz.
There aren’t many places… |
Sept 04
|
…that one can go see Dub Pistols, MJ Cole, Crystal Method, and Fatboy Slim–all in one place, in one night, each doing roughly hour-long sets–for FREE. I swore I’d take advantage of New York City’s clout and reputation, and I did. I bailed on a gathering that I SHOULD have gone to, however, but the invitation was just after the invite to the Pier 54 thing, and I had to make a decision. Props and thanks go to Megan, my ever-awesome girl of 1000 good ideas and to Luciana (whose presence at the party was alluded to, but not written, yesterday), who somehow managed to sound the general alarm for the thing. I wish we’d have caught you there, new friend.
Anyway, the youth of the City sleep under the weight of their summer’s last night as I type. Tomorrow begins another semester, another year, and a countdown until next summer. It is with that renewal in mind that I mention a Renaissance of my own–this one a phoenix-like rise from flame of WriteClub–details forthcoming. |
|
Unqualified successs |
Sept 03
|
The party went off without a hitch and everyone seemed to have a good time–something to be very proud of. Even the police presence (confused and misguided as it was) couldn’t dampen the spirits of the evening. Up till seven, up again at nine, I am a tired bastard. Shot today, Russ’ top secret project (the details of which I am still not disclosing in this so public of forums. Wait for us to be famous, and you’ll know what this was. It looks good and I’m happy about what we have so that’s great, anyway.
I’ve gotta sleep now, because my eyes are closing down… *snore* |
|
Fall arrives! |
Sept 01
|
Finally fall is upon us! It’s my favorite season of the year–the leaves change, the air gets cool and crisp, there’s Halloween… It’s all good stuff. This is supposed to have been an untimately productive weekend, and thus far, I’ve been failing to be as productive as I would like to be. We’ll see how tomorrow goes, what with party prep and all that stuff going on. I have to bake my growing-famous $8 brownies, continue my vendetta of clenliness in the apartment, begin to edit the Rooftop Project, shoot with Russ, and work on the top 100 films for the film-411 poll. It’s a daunting list, to say the least. I’ll do some of the 411 poll before I sleep tonight, but at that rate, it’ll be finished by Christmas. I promised it sooner, so I’ll have to invest more into the project, right? Anyway, I just wanted to do a quick update before I got busy again. I hope that Monday’s update talks incessantly about just how cool the party was and how much I’m looking forward to throwing another one just like it. We shall see–I have high hopes. |
|
I didn’t think it’d happen again in a way worth mentioning… |
Aug 28
|
…but today my muse happened to be this cute girl that I recognized but cannot place. I was desperately hoping that she’d come back up the escalator and we’d talk about where the hell I knew her from, but alas, she is gone. I looked at her, she looked at me–maybe a word I spoke, a word or two. Maybe she nodded, or she blinked to wipe the spectre of me from her vision, but I was not destroyed. After that, Russ and I talked about the pilot about which I am not allowed to write, and it was good. Suffice it to say that I have more work cut out for me. |
|
The muse of the day |
Aug 27
|
Every day, thereis a muse. Sometimes, she doesn’t get a proper name (very rarely, she’s not a she at all but some other vision, sight, or sound), and sometimes she goes straight to my subconscious, inspiring me all but unnoticed. Today’s muse is the girl that puts up her hair absentmindedly as she walks.
That’s all. |
|
Smooth sailing (and a little mischief) |
Aug 25
|
Things have been going pretty well at work recently. I’m still not fully used to the idea that I’m working long hours yet so my productivity is pretty low at the moment, but I’m getting a better feel for how to get things done that I want to do and still be successful at work. What would be ideal would be a connection at work that would allow me to check/reply to e-mail from there. Then I could be in much better touch.
Still no editing on the Rooftop Project, but today or tomorrow I hope to dump the sound to a big file. We’ll see what happens with that. I feel like I should return Jen’s Minidisc recorder, so I really should do it. I think I’ll be picking up some new speakers tomorrow or Monday (having them shipped then, anyway). It’s finally time to complete my surround setup. I have the money and the inclination, so it’s time. Besides, my brother could use the minis. Oh, and I wrote some really cool stuf for the new comic project (currently going by the title DSFS-Codicspace Comicbook Project), although I don’t know how Allan liked it yet–we’ll have to see. |

Two-for-one day! |
Aug 21

Sometimes you feel like a nut…
Next comes an update to the Venture site–Issue4 is no longer in question, but production. My thanks to Andrea and Vincent for again being great sports about the whole thing–they’re the best! |

Things been good |
Aug 21
|
Max has been treating me well. I’m learning a lot of basic things about what the Art Department does and all that–good stuff for me to know. I wrote some really good stuff on the subway this morning, too, inspired half by Allan’s reply to the first thing that I sent him and half by the looks that these girls (at different times) were giving me. Don’t ask–chalk it up to anonymous muses and be happy for me, that’s all. Now, if only it weren’t against the law in NYC to *talk* to women on the subway, I’d feel better. I talked to Russ tonight and he told me about some thing that he wants to put together for his boss’ new project idea and asked if I’d be involved. Of course I said I would…. As more things develop on that, I’ll mention them, no doubt. I feel like there should be a lot to report, but for some reason, I’m rather out of things to say about my new gig. I’d like to take some pictures of the sets and post them here, but we’ll see how that goes. |
|
Sunday wrap-up |
Aug 19
|
At the end of the day (which this almost is), one can look back at one’s weekend and assess. This was a good weekend. As far as blowout weekends go, I think I managed pretty well. I spent quite a bit of money, went out in the city–a passtime long ignored–had visitors (thanks for coming Anna and David) and went to a party on Long Island. Good things.
With my new gig starting I’m going to try to get back to my roots in computer work and edit Rooftop #2, scan some long-needed pictures and maybe consider my clustering setup and reinstall Linux as my nwew webserver. We’ll see. I don’t want to mess up a perfectly good system, but I like the idea of having a Linux router. First the cluster, then the router. I think it’s time to install Morpheus, too. |
|
The strangest day in awhile (in that good way) |
Aug 17
|
Well, yesterday started strangely, and just got weirder. I figured, sitting in my cubicle, that since I had another week or two here before I went entirely insane and just left my gig here at PLI, I’d try out file sharing again and downloaded morpheus. It worked so well that I had to turn down my new music when my phone rang. It was my roommate calling from his job on Max Bickford. He asked if I’d consider being the art PA on the show, I said sure, and he transferred me to Olga, who told me that my job started on Monday. So… I have a new gig on THE EDUCATION OF MAX BICKFORD – starting on Monday! It’s been awhile (as Staind says), but waiting and wanting finally seems to have paid off.
The rest of the day’s weirdness followed immediately. I got a call from my uncle who lives in London about five minutes later, telling me that he was in NYC and wanted to pick me up and take me up to the country to see his new place, my cousin, and just to relax for a few days. That sounded fantastic (I love the country), but between my new gig (that was about seven minutes old) and my weekend plans (which are shaping up to be really complex), I had to to decline. I did ask if they were going to eat, and it turned out that they were eating immediately on the upper east side, so I headed up there quick. Lunch was nice–I got to see my uncle, Janice and Antonia and talk awhile with them. Anyway, I’m boggled at the fact that this week has just been really insane. I owe people calls, e-mails, notes, everything, and have failed to get in touch with people that I really should find. |

We Consumed the Rooftop Peace! |
Aug 15
|
Well, in a frenetic day of shooting, monologues, sound issues and sunshine yesterday, we shot 49 minutes of video and used about an hour of audio in the process of making The Rooftop Project – Consume. What we got was really good stuff, and I’m looking forward to getting a little more wild sound to finish the project with the cackling woman. The thing is going to be an editing nightmare, but I think the final product will be stronger than the first, with better sound and a more polished feel. The goal is to make every project better than the last until we’re really knocking out fantastic projects at will.
In other news, I’m dreaming up ways to create an indie label for my comic ventures, and I think I might be able to be a little successful with it if I work. We shall see. |
|
Shoot plans |
Aug 13
|
It looks like tomorrow is the next day of shooting on the Rooftop Project! We’ve had a great reading and I’m pretty psyched about the potential that we’ve got going for us. Pre-production won’t be finished until shooting starts, unfortunately, but such is the way of hurried shooting. I’d really like to get one more day of shooting in before the end of August, so we’re working to get this one done this week. Sound is going to be Minidisc this time, hopefully providing a better quality soundtrack for us to work from, especially given that we have good microphones this time.
The meeting with Kurt went so well that I brought him back with me to help on the Rooftop shoot. I like having him around, especially since he was one of the two stars of Carpe Noctem, my first attempt at real film work. The weekend went well, and I have Jodi to thank again for letting me in on the party. I got to see Anna again (which is always a treat) and Andi (who said I could call her that and I think it’s extremely adorable) and Bridgett (my apologies if I’ve misspelt her name – I’ve never seen it written). Also there were Kris, Matt and David, bringing the total group all the way to nine (I brought Kurt). A good time was had by all (as far as I can tell). |
|
ROOFTOP PROJECT – SCULPTURE is finally up! |
Aug 9
|
At long last, and after much waiting, the first of the Rooftop Project episodes is online! Go check it out, in two formats, on the Rooftop Project homepage.
The reading went really well last night, too. Andrea and Vincent showed specs of genius as they read–it was inspiring. I really have a feel for the success we’re going to have with this thing, and I hope that with my shooting and editing I can live up to the high standard of exellence that Russ, Andrea and Vincent are setting. I’m off for Princeton tomorrow night to visit my bro, and then to Philly the next day to visit my mom and my sister. The REAL reason for my voyage is to have a head-to-head with Krol, artist extraordinaire and driving force between the artists’ collaboration on issue4. We’re going to go into character detail big time and hopefully get some really strong stuff out of it so we can bring the book home strong through the last four books. |

Much-delayed weekend update |
Aug 7
|
So the weekend came and went days ago. What’s a boy to do? Heather and Steve came up this past weekend, and we had a fun couple of days while trying not to melt. We made it into the city and bought some pants for me (yay for me!) and had a Long Island or two on Friday night (remember that, Heather?)
I’ve been working hard on the Rooftop Project and there’s a reading tonight at the Pantheon. We’ll be getting our writer and our small cast together and will be reading the scripts to two and three. Likely as well, we’ll set up a shoot date for the near future as well. Friday and Monday on Max Bickford went really well, and I actually got a bit of swag to augment my meager paycheck. Sometime, I’ll post a picture of me in my “Better dead than coed” tee shirt that, presumably, will make a debut on TV sometime this fall. Basically, the TV thing is good stuff. There’s also a picture of Russell Crowe on the 411 board (board 18, actually) that I got from this crazy (but very nice) hairstylist on Monday as well. As late as this update is, if I make it any longer, It’ll be even later. There will no doubt be more to mention later. |
|
Is Max short for Maximillian? |
Aug 2
|
If it is, that’s uber-cool. Likely, it’s short for Maxwell, or maybe nothing at all, but I want Maximillian. Today, standing in Max Bickford’s office at his university, I noted a few things. First, I noted that he’s a dog-lover. Not in the Tango-board sort of way, but just a guy that loves dogs. Second, I noticed that he was married to Marsha Gay Harden. I didn’t know that college professors ever married famous people. Third, I noticed that his college looked suspiciously like a movie or TV studio’s set and not a real university at all, and fourth, I noticed that the door to his classroom was on the wrong side. Imagine a classroom that you’d see in the movies or on TV. Then imagine yourself in the teacher’s chair, back to the wall, facing the class. What side is the door on? Always? Okay, the door here is on the OTHER SIDE of the classroom. That’s a problem for me, and I think I’ve gotta take it up with the art director tomorrow should I see him.
It went well today. I ran into a guy I worked with in ’98 on Vanilla Fog/Simply Irresistible, and we were both dumbfounded. He’s still almost a second assistant director, but not quite. I’m not sure what that means about the shelf life of a PA, but it’s great that I met him because that means that tomorrow I’ll give him my info and ask him to think of me first when he needs additional PAs for the set. Also, they want me Monday for the office. Office stuff is pretty easy, except I’m terrible at taking names over the phone. Always have been. I can recite literally entire conversations from memory but can’t recall at all the name of the person who’s calling. It also hurt things that I don’t know anyone that calls nor who they’re calling for. Call time is at 11am, so that means that I’ll be working on Friday night until at least 10, which is a perfect time to go straight to the bars and never look back. I’m hoping that Heather decides to visit me, although I’m not holding my breath because I feel a little like it’s still up in the air. We shall see. |

Emily’s Eighteen! |
Aug 1
|
![]() That’s all, for now. Later, there will definitely be stuff about working with fantastic people on inspiring projects and about how little sleep I seem to be getting all the time. But now is just for wishing Emily a happy birthday. She’s 18. So stop it. Cut it out now. I mean it. Stop. Anyway, She’s in North carolina at the moment, and will never see this wish, at least not unless you tell her about it, so I suggest you e-mail her and tell her happy birthday. If you don’t know her address, ask me, I’ll tell you. I just won’t post without her permission. |

More to write than time to write it |
July 30

1. Change-of-position proposal refused. 2. Writing Image Comics submission for Venture 3. Working on sound design and final cut of Rooftop Project one. 4. Weekend was a good one, visitors were fun, lots done, little sleepThis promises to be an interesting work day, anyway. Job hunt begins immediately in the hope that I get something before the cash runs out. Fingers are crossed. |

The cutting room floor |
July 23
|
The rough-cut of Rooftop Project one is complete! After a relatively socially-uneventful weekend (pleasantly interrupted by a party, thanks to Lily), I can gladly say that I have a decent, working rough cut. There’s still quite a bit of work to be done on the sound especially, but at least it’s moved. By the end of this week, I expect to be streaming it across the web and distributing it in VCD format. Not a bad deal, huh?
Also in the news, I avoided both virus plagues that went around over the past few days and managed to perform a few upgrades to my server (the conversion of the drive, finally, to NTFS, patches and upgrades, and the installation of another gig of HDD space) AND get the FTP site working. Who’s the man? The Sci-fi thing with Andrew is coming along well, and Issue6 of Venture is nearly completely written. What I really need to do is re-acquaint myself with Flash–I’ve been watching a bunch of fantastic Flash productions on the web that just fire the imagination. Props to the guys at Panduck and Ninjai for all their hard work. |
|
Digital Convergence |
July 20
|
Digital Convergence. Isn’t that the company that made that annoying-as-hell CueCat? No, that company had stupid, pointless punctuation in its name, and the title of today’s update does not. Onwards!
Most everything I do is in some way related to making movies, if only in my head. Examples: This has been a busy week, creativity-wise. I’ve been workshopping with my brother one of his sci-fi ideas, and working with him always makes me work harder than I wold work on my own because he’s so creative and so ecclectic and his ideas are so strong. This is a Sci-Fi world that is intended to become a film eventually, but it’s so fun to develop that we’re working on tangents and universe-related stuff as well as actual script-potential material. I’ve also spent a good deal of time (last night, mainly) getting my server ready to stream the Rooftop Project #1 (which should be complete this weekend) and preparing my workstation for capture/editing. There’s lot of digital work going on. I also have worked on the script for Venture, Issue6, hoping to complete it by the time Kurt returns from the beach. Venture will make a great movie someday. |
|
Venture Two and Three COMPLETE! |
July 17
|
The news of tha day is that my second and third book are now cut and stapled and that makes them DONE! OF course, each issue is worth a fortune because there are only like 2 copies of each worldwide, but I’ll be sending them out to try to get them published by someone soon. The only places that I know about are Image (who does accept submissions) and a couple of independent printers whose situations might not be good for me. Any suggestions would be welcomed, of course.
Weekend update (updated) |
July 15
|
So this was a relatively uneventful weekend and that’s just the way I like it. As things wind down, I feel like I can safely say that it was a good weekend, and that I’m feeling rested and relaxed. I figured out how to input decent video into my machine and editing seems to be a doable things as well. we’ll have to see what it looks like as things go on. I’ll likely edit Rooftop Project One sometime this week. Russ has written and gotten to me Rooftop Project Two, and is currently working on a tightening rewrite. I like the current draft very much, and I can’t wait to shoot it. On the agenda this week is the editing of RP1, cutting and stapling of Venture2 & 3, and finishing the writing of Venture6 in preparation for Kurt to draw the last three books all in a row. I fought with Michael this weekend–we took quite a beating both, and decided that we weren’t going to try for two days in a row, even though I kind of wanted to do it. There’s no better way to get tough than to fight through the pain, right? Also this weekend I caught Taxi Driver and Midnight Cowboy, helping dig me out of the monumental movie hole that I find myself continually in. Hopefully eventually the world won’t look upon me as a cinematic troglodite because of the sheer number of films I’ve thus far missed. Bedtime fast approaches, but I thought it important to note that hopefully very soon, we’ll have some video available from this site to view.maybe I’ll even stream 2 or 3 kinds of video from over here. we’ll see. Yay for video.Updated update: Everything’s back to normal, and you shouldn’t notice a difference. *whew* |
|
Scanner Woes and other things |
July 11
|
So my scanner is out of commission now that I installed Linux on the testbed here at work and wiped WinNT and WinME from its memory. Besides the fact that it won’t scan at anything above like 250 DPI anymore without being in grayscale mode, it was really just time for a new scanner. So I went over to mwave and got myself a new Canon scanner that also will do film, which is very good for me, since I have a bunch of things that I’m looking to scan in original negative mode and manipulate. Good stuff, huh? Tomorrow is going to begin my quest to input video to my PC in a high res sort of way–we’ll see what happens with that, too. Once I’ve figured out input, I’ll be working on the editing of the first Rooftop Project, the second script of which is in the works today. Also in the works is Venture5 (believe it or not)–the script is written and I’m waiting a little while before I dive in to rewrite and tighten it up. As soon as I give it to Kurt (who has COMPLETED his duties on Issue4 already–we only wait on Adam), I’ll create an official V5 page under the Venture site. Ooooh, that’ll require a redesign of the splash page. Can I handle it? Anyway, once I get my new scanner, I’ll work on getting some pictures up from my Prague trip. Until then, I’ll create a graphic and maybe a layout for the potential photo spread. Thanks for reading. |

Return Trip |
July 9
|
There is a lot to say and I’m not really sure where to begin. I spent the last week with my mom and brother in Prague. I was going to update before I left, but, conveniently, my internet connection went out on Saturday morning, leaving me blind to the world and my roommate w/o internet this past week.
Prague was succulent (to borrow a word), and there’s more to tell than I plan on typing here, at the very least. The city was beautiful, the weather perfect, the countryside breathtaking and the women gorgeous. There’s barely enough space on my hard drive for the praise I could heap, and nowhere enough to hold the things I learned, but I’ll put up a page in a couple of days that will hold pictures and a few notes that may be of interest to those involved or those who know me. |
