Vacation

Vacation and personal trips.  In other words, irresponsible jaunts to parts unknown (and known) and the stories that come out of them.

I'm in Michigan

I was supposed to be skiing Wednesday, Thursday and today, but after 3 hours of rainy skiing Wednesday and no skiing (or break from the rain) on Thursday, I awoke today to gray-but-dry-skies, a fresh inch of snow on the ground (the only inch we have here) and the slopes opening for business as usual.  I only skied for about 5.5 hours today, but that's okay - I'm fat and out of shape and committed to getting more skiing in this winter, both with Casey AND with Drew.  I'm even considering looking into doing a group ski thing up to Big Bear or Mountain High or whatever - we'll see.

Anyway, I just wanted to check in - it's been another long-ass time.  Ann Arbor again tomorrow, then Cleveland.  Back to Detroit (where I'd like to buy a house) on Monday, then to LA and business for the week before Christmas.

NYC went by fast

I need a "work travel" section, it would appear.

Anyway, I'm home in LA, trying to get caught up on the things I've got to do (I'm looking at you, NetTheory) and cleaned up for the weekend, which promises to be a whirlwind of packing, running around, ridiculous drinking and other debaucherous stuff.

I only took product photos while I was in NYC, so I have nothing to show you (wait, that's a lie!  See the photo rotator for a shot I took!), but I'll be better about that for the next update.  Branded shoots have been happening, actually, so that's good!

Don't Drive Across the Country in a Wrangler

map of the tripIf you buy a red 4-cylinder soft top Jeep, I want to recommend that you don't plan to drive it across the country with a white Honda Rebel 250 on a carrier attached to the trailer hitch. If you are going to do all that, I'd recommend not filling it up with crap and having a bum fuel or electrical system.

Packed UpIt's quite a bit of work to get across Oklahoma and North out of Texas without getting practically blown off the road, first of all.  That was maybe the hardest day of driving I'd ever done, honestly. Since it was my second day on the road, I was already tired, too, which didn't make the day any easier.

On the first day of the trip I had some problems with either the electrical system or the fuel pump that resulted in stalling when the road was bumpy, which was nearly all the time.  Reseating the wires on the distributor cap and the spark plugs seemed to help during the windy day, which was a small blessing, but the stalling came back in the evening and intermittently throughout the other two days of the trip.

I wore earplugs for four straight days, which actually made the noise bearable, but also made my ear canals swell.  I felt like a bit of a fool hopping in my jeep and then smooshing earplugs into my ears, but man, was it worth it.  Next time I drive across the country, I'm going to do it west-to-east.  And with another person.  Without earplugs.

After the break I've stuck a ridiculously-large version of the map above.  It totally borks the layout, though, so be forewarned.

1997 Jeep Wrangler

Jeep WranglerSo I pulled the trigger.  That there is a 1997 Jeep Wrangler SE with an unknown lift kit, an 8000# winch on the front and a class 3 or 4 hitch on the back.  It's got a tan ragtop (as you can tell from the picture) and big 'ol tires.  The mirrors have already been moved to the windshield posts, which is great for door-less driving, and I've already pulled everything out/off and driven around completely unfettered by sides, tops or doors.

that's it for now - more pics and thoughts to come, but I wanted to post this up 'cause it's an epic day in matt-ville today.  Click the pic to load the full size cameraphone image in a new tab.

Egypt - Days 4-6

New Library at AlexandriaSo I didn't update during my down day, and after that, events just proceeded too fast for me to keep up with.  What follows, by way of apology, is a condensed account of the Shit I Did during those last couple of days.

It's an apology because it's short.  Trust me, you'll appreciate it.

Okay, actually, coming back to my introduction after writing the entry, I have to say that it's not short, just shorter than it would have been had I written full updates day-by-day.  Maybe.  And this entry is absolutely full of absurd asides, which, of course, make it much longer than it needs to be.  So this is an apology for the fact that the apology-by-way-of-brevity is actually bullshit.  Probably you should skip this one.
