Ruby-on-Rails is hard

okay, that's not true, maybe, but installing it is hard on my Ubuntu VM, that's for sure.  I tried on Thursday, with no success.  I'm trying again today, and have already restored my snapshot once, and the error I just got means I'll probably have to do it again.

There has been an error while running make.
Aborting the installation.

Really?

Sorry I've been bad about updating - I haven't done much of note so far this year.  Not that I ever update about things "of note" but still.

Edit: It got easier.  I followed this tutorial for Ubuntu 11.10 and had only one glitch that was solved by reading the first few comments.

haven't been better about posting

The internet is out at the office, so what do I do?

Write a blog post!

Thanksgiving came and went with nary a mention (Happy Thanksgiving!), and Scott & Sharon spent the weekend (with Drew & April spending a couple of days as well), also with nary a mention.  It was awesome having them all in town, and reminded me why I like having friends and knowing people.

Now I'm in New York, where it's in the 50's and cloudy, but at least they have Dunkin Donuts.  I forgot to get one yesterday until I was walking home from the office sometime after 8, but it was still tasty.  Might have to go get another this afternoon.  I'm here for a couple more days yet, but if the internet doesn't come back soon, I may just change my flight and go home because I'm way too tired to not be working.

happy Halloween!

I know it's been awhile.  I'd apologize, but it'd be ridiculous. I was doing that thing where I wanted to update, but there was so much to talk about that I ended up failing because I didn't want to spend the time. So, what I'm going to do is write a couple of posts over the next few days and try to catch up that way.Grand Canyon

I drove across the country, saw a bunch of friends and family, did a little work, spent a lot of money, threw a Halloween party and generally caused all manner of mayhem and destruction in the lives of everyone I touched.  I'm like the plague that way.  I've also failed to fix a slide projector, managed to fix a lighter socket, gotten shirts made for PCW, done two (small) gigs for same, and who knows what all else.  It's been a challenge.  I'm sure I'll update about more than just that, but that's a good start.

Oh, and I'm looking for Aikido schools to try.  We'll see how that goes.  I figure I'll do it for November and December and if I don't actually participate, I'll start 2012 having at least given it a shot.  Larger Grand Canyon pic after the break.

29th Street from 8 floors up

It's been awhile, eh?

I haven't been dead or anything, just working for the man.  And by that, I mean me, because I am the man.  Or A man, really - one of many.  Gosh.

Anyway, I'm working in NYC today - my last of five days here.  Survived the hurricane-that-wasn't (at least wasn't-in-New-York), and survived the process of installing new hardware here at MWS.

What else?  PCW work has been coming along slowly-but-surely, and by the time I get home, I should have shirts in production, gear out to rent and stencils waiting at the house for me to paint all over our gear.  Fun!  Now all we need is more work and someone to help me organize it all, and we'll be golden.  Oh, and some new hardware and a case or two.  But definitely more work.

I've been trying to go to the beach when I've been in LA, although the clouds haven't always cooperated, and have been trying to shoot for my tattoo book, although CraigsList hasn't always cooperated.  I'll actually try to get a post made from here before I leave today, which might help matters some.  I might also make my assistant post there as well, to try to set meetings with folks for this week.  Then we can start in September (fun times!) and make things happen.  Casey had a good idea for me to try out, but I'm afraid it'll cost a bunch of money and it'll be a long time before I can make it back, if I ever do.  I'd like to try it because it's a good idea.  We'll see.

Bigger version of this same picture after the break.
