Lost/Home Mix - THE METRIC PLAYLIST
Sunday, 02 November 2008 10:00
Anyone remember Max Headroom? Matt Frewer? Well this song was played everywhere in the 80s when music was weird and parachute pants were cool. Art of Noise was doing its classical music/electronic mix and it was popular. The album version of this song is different without the Max Headroom track, but I was lucky to find the single version. This one brings me back because at 31 I feel old and musically out of touch. As for the mix, we all get tired now and than of the journey for finding home. It gets in your mind and you cant sleep. Obsession becomes insomnia. Then we return to the 80s in our minds and we are wearing jam pants and OP T-shirts. Oh god...why...all the...neon. It keeps me up at night. I need to get to sleep.

Cell Phones at Best Buy?
Friday, 31 October 2008 06:56
Okay, so my Centro has a broken screen. Im a big Centro supporter, but I cant see spending $120+ on another Centro (which doesnt work in Vista64, btw) only to have to re-up my contract and deal with all that. Ive been following the sweetness that is the HTC "Diamond" line (or whatever theyre calling the line of the Diamond, Pro and HD these days) and think Im sold on the Touch Pro. I held a non-working copy next to my Centro today and theyre friggin identical in size, which is cool and surprising, given the HTC Pros slide-y keyboard.
That said, Best Buy has it for $30 cheaper than Sprint does. The sad thing was that Im only eligible for a $75 rebate because Ive only had my Centro since October 18th or so of last year. Im supposedly eligible for the super-customer thing with Sprint, but I dunno how thatll work. Note that I said "was" up there, because I called Sprint this morning and they were nice enough to offer me the "extra" $75 as an incentive to stay with them rather than going to get a sweet-ass G1 or a cliche-but-still-sweet iPhone. So that brings the price sort of to within shouting distance.
Theres a rumor of a 20% off coupon floating around the web thatll knock another $60 off the price of the phone, too, so thatll help. From Best Buys $300 to $240 sounds good. If I can find a way to make it better, I will. I supposedly have some reward-zone gift certificates available, so Ill check those, too.
Hopefully youll soon see a picture of my new phone posted up right here. No more broken phones!

ysterious Proble
Thursday, 30 October 2008 06:06
So a little while ago, my "M" key just quit working. A restart got it fixed, but really. The "M" key? Thats just wrong.
What else?
Ive managed not to snack at all this week thus far (what is it, Wednesday already?), and its good. Ive actually had hunger pangs that I think were just my body complaining that I wasnt stuffing it full of junk at all hours of the day, so I ignored them. Three squares for this guy, at least for awhile.
Snacking is for the weak!
Oh, I have a confession: Ive now played World of Warcraft. Mostly, its to test out my new system and see how pretty it can look, but its a little fun, too. Thus far, though, it hasnt really impressed me, so when I get my XBox back, Ill go back to playing stuff on that. Esp. now that the new dashboard comes with HD-streaming. And my XBox360 RROD Dates are as follows:
10/20: RROD, get UPS label
10/23: Hand Box to UPS Driver
10/28: email notice that the package was delivered in TX
And thats where we are, XBox-style. Oh, and also (jumping topics like a CHAMP, I tell you!), maybe some of my older readers can tell me if I ever signed up for WoW before, btw. I tried to sign up as Flicman and it was already taken. Was there WoW in college? I know there was regular Warcraft, but WoW? It was vexing.
Anyway, Im off to do some actual writing. Hard to do from here, but Ill give it a shot. Happy Wednesday.

Lost/Home Mix - THE METRIC PLAYLIST

Ive seen Buffalo Daughter live once, they opened up for Girls Against Boys. The drummer was "healthy", squeezed behind his drums and never missed a beat. The bassist during a ten minute song played the same chord for the duration and never missed a note. They were terrific live and are a good rock band who has solid albums with lots of rock experimentation. This song is about wanting something just for a little bit. You are lost and you remember what you are missing. You fear you may never get back and you just want to experience it again. As the quote goes "Two minutes in Heaven are better than one minute in Heaven". We are asking for five, is that so wrong? You cant be lost unless you have somewhere you have to get to.

And the beat goes on
Tuesday, 28 October 2008 23:00
First: Emily is getting better. Shes got an infected node or something that a bunch of steroids, antibiotics and painkillers over 10 days should fix. Go hospitals.
Second: Who can believe that Halloween is almost here? Its 90-degrees here almost every day and its sunny as hell. That said, we did go to the Hollywood & Highland complex on Saturday morning for the International Thriller Dance or something. It was rad.

Per usual, there are two slightly larger pics after the break. This time, though, Ive gone and put them in the photo albums, too, because I look forward to seeing them come up on the photo rotator. Have I mentioned my love for the photo rotator?
Anyway, what are you dressing as for Halloween? Indiana Jones? Wall-E? The Cowardly Lion? Tell me. And if you have great LA-centric plans, let me know. Im looking to do something after the parade.

Lost/Home Mix - THE METRIC PLAYLIST

We move on to Covenant, and industrial/EBM/goth/dance band(It all depends on who you talk to and which elitist wants to be in charge of naming things. Electronica? Really?!?) They sing to us about sending a signal to come home in a get your feet moving kind of way. People shouldnt let people get lost, so now you have a shiny light to follow instead of the one you stared at to get lost in the first place. Attention spans in nano-seconds will have you separated quickly.

"Why didnt anyone tell me my ass was so big?"
Friday, 24 October 2008 22:54
Although my ass IS big, that was actually a reference to the fact that I inadvertently made practically the entire site bold from the auditorium on Wednesday. Oops. When youre closing a bold tag, you really need to use "b" and not "p". Ah well. I knew that someday a crack would appear in the armor. Someday my veneer of perfection would wear off and Id expose the humanity behind the curtain.
Try not to think about veneered curtains too hard.
Anyway, Steve is here at the moment, having come up on his day off yesterday. Sweet. We watched the Phils lose (could I *be* worse luck for Philly teams?) and wandered into a couple bars... pretty typical Thursday night, actually.
After Emilys continuing car debacle yesterday, I ran into a UPS man, which was sweet because Ive had my 360 boxed up since about 30 minutes after the RROD happened. Now Ill keep track of the thing as it makes its trip to Texas and (hopefully) back. The centerpiece of my home media center is gone - lame!
Thats enough for now. Time for the Neighbor and some work, probably in that order.

I should LiveBlog the Shoah event
Thursday, 23 October 2008 08:49
But I have to work it, sort of.
Im doing the thing I do for Hipster Dave tonight, this time for Bette Midler and the USC Shaoh Foundation Institute. Honestly. Thats what its called - the Shaoh Foundation Institute. More than a Foundation, more than an Institute, its both. Amazing.
Ill update you later, but at the moment, Ive already been sitting 7 feet from Speilberg, Billy Crystal almost walked into me, and I will have the pleasure of singing "Whale of a Tale" under my breath at Kirk Douglas. Oh, and dont forget Bette. Im sure there will also be other folks here of note, but I may not see them, given my position next to the stage and behind the black curtain.
At least I can stare at the Harlettes.
More later.
Update: I didnt see any more celebs, so theres no one else to name drop, I guess. There was this guy who looked all sketch who got kicked out while we were wrapping up (better late than never, I say). It was weird, there was a group of stragglers to whom he was attached, and when security called his name and brought him aside for a minute, there was nary a ripple. It was as if the group hadnt even noticed that one of its own had been pulled out for questioning. I couldnt hear everything that was being said, but the gist was that he wasnt on the invite list and wasnt welcome as a crasher. Whatever, I was more interested in the bizarre non-reaction from the group.

Microsofts Anti-Piracy Day and Internet Infamy
Tuesday, 21 October 2008 22:40
Thats two things, for those of you keeping score. First, Microsoft has announced that today is global antipiracy day. I didnt know about it in advance, so I couldnt get tickets to the conference, but Ill be down at the local bar celebrating my new knowledge with a pint. In the spirit of getting people educated about piracy, heres a list of things about piracy that are just as true as whatever Microsoft is going to tell you.
- Piracy encourages software purchases
- Piracy drives the purchase of hardware
- Piracy keeps Microsoft at #1 in OS/Office Suite Sales
- Piracy is bad for open source
I dunno. Im sure theres more, but Im too focused on internet infamy to care.
Two weeks ago when the Sarah Palin Report was out, I put it in my temp folder and told a few people about it. Someone leaked it to somewhere, because before the day was out on the 9th, it was on DailyKOS, Reddit and a bunch of other places, all linking to where I have it. I dont know why they didnt pull it themselves to host, but whatever. So right now, of my top 20 search terms, 17 are about Palin. The other three are about clapboard - #2 is, oddly, clapboard.org. Then #5 is clapboard, then #20 is "clap board". To give you an example of how little traffic I get on a regular basis, this tiny thing gave me a 70x bump in traffic. Unfortunately, none of it came to the front page, really. Even the conservatives who came to get it to make fun of liberals who "fell for" the report didnt bother to come to the main site.
But thats why I have Kurt and Emily - theyll drive traffic here with their musical tastes. Have you heard Krols #3? Its pretty rad.

Lost/Home Mix - THE METRIC PLAYLIST
Tuesday, 21 October 2008 09:47
When youre lost you should never lose your cool. It can easily happen enough and can get you in more trouble than you already are in. So the next song is by Overseer. A dance group that should have come out with a new one by now but havent. They do the heavy dance and keep it going with the smoother tracks. As nervous and angst ridden as you may get when you have no idea where to go or you know where to go but have no idea how to get there, always keep it in check. When those around you are getting lost, never, never lose your composure. Wed all be on the side of the road using our thumbs to catch a lift.
