Hotel Review - New Orleans Sheraton

I haven't written a hotel review in awhile, so here's one for you.

The Sheraton New Orleans hotel has fascinating elevators with no floor buttons, but air conditioners that don't condition and all-flat-sheet bed construction.  Overall, that makes for a sad matt.  Don't read any further unless you really want to read a hotel review.  Seriously.

back on the road

Hey there.  I'm getting back on the road, which means one of three things.

Either:

  1. I'll start posting more because more shit is happening to me
  2. I'll start posting less because I'm busy (or totally unimpressed with all the places I am)
  3. I'll keep the same non-schedule of posting once every fifteen days.

I know i've been sucking at this lately more than usual, even, but rest assured, I'm sucking at everything, not just updating.  I don't even tweet very often anymore.  And don't even ask about fucking BRANDED, which saw 3 of 3 models scheduled this month cancel.  Weak.

technology is my nemesis!

Despite what I just tweeted, I don't think my inability to grasp a few simple tech concepts is a symptom of getting old, although maybe, upon reflection, it is.  My failing comes in the way I learn, either by doing (and making shitloads of mistakes) or by talking about doing, then doing, and making way fewer mistakes.  Probably because I'm old, I have way less time to just do shit, and somehow, fewer people to do them with.  I guess we have less time to screw around and learn the hard way now than we did as kids?  I dunno.

I mention this now because I'm messing with the whole PXE thing that's clearly been around forever (in computer time, anyway), but I'm just now getting to it.  A well-configured PXE server could be a real benefit to me, or could soon be a real benefit to me, and I just can't dedicate enough time to it to make it work.  I went into it assuming that it'd be way too complex for me, but that turned out not to be true at all.  What's more the case is that I can't dedicate enough time to get over the absurd hurdles that I keep finding, and that seem endemic to this type of project.

Anyway, this is only interesting to me, so I'll keep it short.  But you can bet I'll tell you when I've figured something worthwhile out.

Compound Cabernet

wine labelBottling: complete!

If you're interested, you can read the entire story right here.

The wine is good, if a little fruity and low-alcohol, but for an all-natural wine that I made in my house, it's awesome.  I'm looking forward to drinking it and making other people drink it after the bottle shock has worn off.  Really, this'll be a great fall-time wine, if it lasts that long, so fall 2011 is when I'm thinking we'll drink the lions' share of this first batch of juice.

I'm already looking forward to making more wine, and am in the "serious consideration of varietals" phase at the moment.   Yay for wine.

travellin' notes

since last I've updated, there's been a trip to Vegas (Monday through Wednesday), some ill-lit and hasty shooting, a brief talk at CSN that may be the start of a trend for PCW, the purchase of two of the oldest 1U servers still in working order, lots of computer nonsense, a little bit of wine drinking, lots of money spent and probably nothing really of note.

I saw in stark terms how much I have yet to do on myriad projects, and how much I have to learn, and for the first time (I think), I immediately thought of going to someone younger than me to show me how to do some tech crap because I don't really know how to do it and would rather be shown than teach myself.  Nothing like being busy and old.

Oh, and I also flew to New York, where I sit in the Starbucks that is my early-morning home when I get here before the store opens.  Fun times.  I'd import video, but the battery on this thing (the vaunted, non-replaceable 10-hour battery, of course) only has a couple hours left, and doing anything strenuous would seriously limit that.  Hell, I haven't even connected to the wireless yet because I don't believe my stupid MiFi will last 1.5 hours.

Anyway, maybe this time I'll shoot someone for my book.  First of all, I have to call the hotel and ask about check-in.  It's probably also time to research the way real people run their companies because whatever I'm doing isn't making much sense, nor is it working particularly well.  Also not working well - this post.  Sorry about that.

hello again

Hi, my name is Matt, and I'm a workaholic.

I keep thinking, "hey, I'll update Clapboard this afternoon!" and then later, "Eh, nothing's happened... forget it." and there you go - weeks go by.  Mostly, I've been working, but some other interesting things have happened.  I did some work, but not really even that much of that, and I certainly don't want to talk about it.  Let's do a list of things maybe worth talking about after the break...

flexing a green thumb

I don't have a "growing shit" topic, but maybe I should.  I mean, I grow things every couple of years, right? Meh.

I do like growing things.  I didn't get the flower-bed gene from my mom and grandfather, but definitely the gene for wanting to grow things in season and such is alive and well.  I also think it's cool to grow plants that are in their habitat, which is why I'm into citrus trees despite the fact that I don't really like citrus.  I mean, lemons are multi-purpose because you can use their juice and zest in cooking, but oranges?  I just hope to have lots of friends that like oranges.  I may try an avocado tree next - they're also semi-local.  And avocados are amazing.

Okay, I'm going to break this page up - too much chatter about fruits by a nut for the home page.  Do check back later though, because I'm about to spend my afternoon doing some super-secret awesomeness that you'll want to read about.  You know, in a few days when I update about it.
